Way Overpriced May 30, 2010 P. M. Waller III (Woodstock, GA, US) I'm no IT professional, but I do know the basics when shopping for a computer. For $[...], this is way overpriced. The Atom processor is one of the worst out there, the 1.7 Ghz speed is slow compared to comparably priced desktops (most offering 2 something to 3...P.S. faster is better), and the 1 GB of RAM is a joke. I have nothing against eMachines as I've had one before and it worked fine, but do some comparision shopping and you'll quickly see that there are MUCH better deals out there. I would suggest [...], or other Amazon desktops. Spend the extra $50-$100 and you'll get a computer at least twice as "good" as this one. Plus, you'll get Windows 7 already installed which is a much better operating system. Good luck.
Still waiting! March 17, 2010 Leo Wicker (Putnam, CT) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Purchased in good faith. It arrived DOA. That's okay. Stuff happens. I understand that. What I DON'T understand however is why I still haven't gotten my money back. This company's a turtle when it comes to issuing a refund. Would not buy from again. They really should rethink the way they handle these matters. Good will can go a long way towards building a customer base. I don't believe they get it!
You Get What You Pay For March 13, 2010 N. Thomas (Pittsburgh, PA) I bought this computer when my Compaq Presario crashed unexpectedly. I had it for 9 years and loved it like it was one of my kids. I didn't have the money to spend on a similar computer so when I saw this one for $248 I ordered it. I find that this e-machine is mainly good for surfing the internet and sending e-mail. When I bought a virus shield the computer wouldn't read it. I assumed it was the disk and returned it, but when I dropped $160 on Microsoft Office Home and Student I, again had trouble downloading the software to my computer. It is kind of like taking a step back in time. I started trying to download the software at 5pm and here it is 7:23 pm and just now finished. I tried to enter the product key number and click continue and thought I'd be on my merry way in 5 seconds, but nope. The system wouldn't allow me to enter the product key. I had to remove the free trial software manually and re-install. It has been my personal experience at home and at work that this wasn't necessary. The new software would overlay or be removed automatically. This computer is FUNCTIONAL, but I would not use it as your main home computer in this day and age. It is an ok computer, but it is a little more work than I expected, but as I said, you get what you pay for. It is dependable. I will give it that (so far). I've had it for about 2.5 months. Hopefully I won't have to upload anymore software. The only way I was able to get virus softare on this computer was to go through Verizon FIOS. They sent me their link and I downloaded the virus shield.
03/28/10 - Just thought I'd make an update. I have already had to order a new keyboard b/c the one that came with the computer broke already. The good news is that there were no questions asked and customer service sent out a new keyboard (the same cheap kind that came with the computer) within 3 business days. This computer has me all kinds of nervous. I do a lot of stuff online and cannot function w/o a computer.
Amazon's eMachine with Windows XP February 18, 2010 Ellyn C. Potter (Clemmons, NC) I became fascinated with eMachines when my big powerful computer crashed and my son loaned me his eMachine. I liked that it had XP instead of Vista.....XP is one of my favorite operating systems. So, I began to search for an eMachine with XP (most computers no longer have XP)and I found the eMachines EL1600-01 with XP SP3. I have had it for a week now and am very pleased with it. It has adequate processor speed, RAM, and hard drive for everything I wish to do with it. An added benefit for me is that is will run some of my favorite older programs that I can't use on my Vista 64-bit computer. Overall, this is an excellent, reasonably priced computer and is a great back-up when the "big-boy" crashes.
